CURRENT TRENDS...

As the Winter Trout Stocking Season approaches in North Texas, fishermen can start their Season early by making a run north across the border to Oklahoma! In particular are three Oklahoma rivers - the Blue River, the Lower Illinois River, and the Lower Mountain Fork River. All three rivers are within a day-trip away from the DFW Metroplex, and two of the rivers are stocked year round with trout!

The Blue River is located near Tishimingo. Key items of interest are:

  • Blue River Public Hunting and Fishing Area is comprised of three units - Bill and Valerie Plaster Wildlife Management Unit, Blue River Campground, and Carl R. and Ruth Walker Landrum Wilderness.

  • The river is stocked with Rainbow Trout from November to March

  • The area by Hughes Crossing is a popular put and take section and is located near the campgrounds.

  • There is a catch and release area in the northern section of the Bill and Valerie Plaster Wildlife Management Unit.
  • Two trout derbies are held on the river each season - usually in November and Ferbuary.
  • For the latest info on the Blue River, do give Scotty a ring at Scotty's Blue River One Stop - (580) 371-9288.

The Lower Mountain Fork River (LMF) is located near Broken Bow and Hochatown. Key items of interest are:

  • Beavers Bend State Park offers camping and cabins for those wanting to stay longer than a day-trip.

  • The river is stocked year round with Rainbow and Brown Trout! Moreover, wild stocked trout do inhabit the river, so the opportunity to catch a trout does not depend soley on the trout stocking schedule.

  • Floods in 2015 and early 2016 destroyed a number of buildings and roads; however, the buildings like the Beavers Bend Fly Shop are open again and with exception of the bridge/road by Spillway Creek all roads are open again.

  • Key terms to learn about are: Spillway Creek, Cold Hole, Evening Hole, Red and Blue Zones, Zone I-III, the Bluffs, Cardiac Hill, Regeneration Dam,... there are others but these will make a good start for a trip to the LMF! PS: Lost Creek is lost but might as well learn about it while learning the other key terms.

  • For more on the key terms and the latest info, stop by the Beavers Bend Fly Shop and see Coach Eddie Brister - (580) 494-6071.

The Lower Illinois River (LIR) is located near Gore and Lake Tenkiller. Key items of interest are:

  • There are no camping facilities; be prepared to stay at an offsite location if staying overnight.

  • The river is stocked year round on a weekly basis with Rainbow Trout and with Brown Trout when they are available.

  • The lower portion of the area between the stream gage and the gravel plant is limited to artificial lures and flies with barbless hooks only or with live bait using a 3/0 hook or larger. In addition, the area has a size limit of over 20 inches for trout. Note: Regulations for the upper portion are the same as the rest of the river.

  • For the latest info on the Lower Iliinois River, do give the Lower Illinois Fly Fishing Guide a call - (405) 558-1974.

PS: Do check out Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's (OWDC) Trout Information site for more info on other areas stocked by the ODWC. Also, when harvesting trout, be sure to have a tag attached to your stringer or risk being fined. The tag will have your name and Oklahoma Fishing License Number.

Blue River in Oklahoma is stocked with Rainbow Trout from November to March each Trout Stocking Season. With this in mind, here is a video we posted several years ago when we still managed our original blog - CityofAllenFishing.blogspot.com. The video describes the route we took from Allen, Texas to the Blue River.

Lower Mountain Fork ... video shows a trip to the river after the 2015 floods but before the 2016 flood. Action was slow that day but the one keeper Rainbow Trout more than made up for it. Even got some great underwater video of the trout lurking in the pool we were fishing.
